A smartly reconditioned car engine is a good way to save money, time energy etc, but there is proper planning to be considered before the process can begin or else it could lead to a faulty engine repair and unwanted cost escalations. Here is a very basic guide to recondition a car engine properly;
1.Removal of the engine :
First, the car engine has to be properly removed from the car. For this purpose a well-lit place is the best option, where there is enough room to move and place the components, it is advised to take pictures of the components, as many as possible to avoid confusion when it comes to assembly. When removing the engine, it is advised to mark the hinge bolts to locate them easily or else missing components can cause trouble while rebuilding the engine. Then the external engine components are to be disconnected properly, starting with the ground cable on the battery, followed by the draining of coolant and radiator hoses, here metal clamps are not to be damaged as replacing them is difficult. While removing each and every external component pictures are to be taken for reference. Now, disconnect the exhaust manifold and remove all connections to the transmission before removing it. Now, with the support of jack stands under the transmission, disconnect the bolts, support is required as without bolts the transmission would fall, as it would have nothing holding it. Finally, connect the hoist to the lifting points on the cylinder heads or other big bolts. Now, start lifting the front slowly.
2.Engine work :
With the vehicle shop manual, start reconditioning the engine. Inspecting the engine should be the first priority, check all the plugs, the fluid in them, all connections and joints between each component while inspecting, the Harmonic Balancer, if the isolation rubber is cracking then it must be replaced.
Inspection of the distributor for the signs of looseness then followed by inspection of the alternator belt for wear and tears, then go for clutch assembly.
Then remove the exhaust manifold, from here on main disassembling the rest of the engine starts, starting with oil pan, valve covers, cylinder heads. Check the cylinder bores, then remove the piston and rod assemblies, following with an inspection of the crankshaft, and with other parts also disassembled.
Now, with each part removed, all of them are to be inspected carefully and if any damage is found the parts are to be replaced.
3. Reassembly :
After all checks and rechecks, oil channels are to be well maintained to avoid dirt collection.
All components are then thoroughly oiled, OEM oil, grease etc are recommended. Then install all main caps and the crankshaft, now go for installation of timing chain and belt to the specification, followed by new pistons, seals, rings and gaskets. After this piston and rod assemblies are installed, then go for the head gasket, new valve heads, valve train, etc.
4. Reinstallation of the engine :
For complete overhaul, all other works like installing a transmission, replacing the air conditioner, changing the radiator, and get a new starter.
Fill the new oil filter with new motor oil ( break-in oil ).
Lower the engine with the help of the hoist. After this check the initial start-up. Run the engine at various speed for its performance, then change the oil and the filter after finishing the first 160 km, followed by the change in every 1600 km once every three months.
